Pattern 1936 Polizei-Unterführerdegan & Schutzstaffel Portepee

A Second World War pattern 1936 German Police NCO’s sword (Polizei-Unterführerdegan) and scabbard manufactured by the firm of Peter Daniel Krebs of Solingen and fitted with a First Pattern Schutzstaffel Portepee (sword knot).  This very good WW2 German Polizei-Unterführerdegan, or Police NCO’s Sword and scabbard manufactured by Peter Daniel Krebs of Solingen, is identical to the model classified as the Pattern 1936 andillustrated on page 249-255 of ‘Swords Of Germany 1900/1945’ by John R. AngoliaIt is fitted with a first pattern Schutzstaffel Portepee (sword knot).

On the 17 June 1936 Hermann Göring ceded control of the entire German Police Force and Fire Department, the Feurwehr, to Reichsfürer- Schutzstaffel Heinrich Himmler as Commander-in-Chief of the German Police.  As John R. Angolia wrote “virtually all of the German police and civil defense organizations were placed under the control of the Schutzstaffel, it was for this reason that the Schutzstaffel, Police and Fire Departments would boast identical pattern swords with only minor differences.

Third Reich Polizeidegan (Police Swords) were used by officers and NCO’s from all branches of the German Police, and were made by a number of well-known German edged weapon manufacturers. The difference between officer’s swords and those used by Polizei-Unterführer(Police NCO’s) was set out in the ‘Blade Sidearms of the Police’ section of the ‘Police Manual for Ordnance and Supply Personnel’ reproduced on pages 250-251 of Angolia’s book.  The key differences between NCO’s swords, like this example and the officers Führerdegan were the heavier guard, flat pommel cap, plain grip and plain scabbard drag.  This particular example, is in very good original condition, and was produced by the Solingen firm of Peter Daniel Krebs as indicated by the trademark Shield/Crayfish and Pet. Dan. Krebs. Solingen motto.

A Pattern 1936 Polizei-Unterführerdegan Police NCO’s sword fitted with a D-guard, single bow type hilt and truncated quillon with plated flat topped pommel and oakleaved plated steel ferrule.  All plated metal furniture on the hilt is patinated consistent with age and use while the hardwood grips are in good condition (see pictures). The obverse hilt features the copper police eagle insignia inset into the wooden grip which is in good condition. The Blade is single-edged with a single fuller on both sides and is in good patinated condition. The painted steel scabbard, with its single hanger-ring and attaching loop for a belt frog strap, is in very good condition.

This example is fitted with a first pattern Schutzstaffel Portepee (sword knot).  Originally designed to secure the sword to the holder’s wrist the portepee evolved into a purely decorative item. At first, Schutzstaffel, Police and Fire Department personnel utilised Wehrmacht  (Army) type portepees. However in 1936, with the introduction of the Polizei-Unterführerdegan, a series of distinctive, sword portepees/troddels were introduced for use by Schutzstaffel, Police and Fire Police Officer’s, Officer Candidates, Senior NCO’s and enlisted personnel. This example was authorized for wear by Schutzstaffel NCO’s).

This Third Reich Polizei-Unterführerdegan Police NCO’s sword is in very good original condition and is a first class example of its type.
