FIRST WORLD WAR GERMAN 'ERSATZ' (SUBSTITUTE) MAUSER KNIFE BAYONET (EB 41 - CARTER) FITTED WITH AN ERSATZ SHEET STEEL Sg 98/05 SCABBARD MANUFACTURED TO FIT THE GEWEHR 88 COMMISSION RIFLE AND THE GEWEHR 98.  This bayonet, designated EB41 by Anthony Carter in ‘German Bayonets Volume III’, was produced to combat the shortage of production weapons to the rapidly expanding Imperial German Forces (consisting of Prussian, Saxon and Bavarian Army’s) in the early years of the First World War and is a wartime substitute version of the Sg 98/05.

Ersatz (meaning ‘substitute’) bayonets were by definition simple, mass produced and by pre-war standards, crude, weapons designed to fill a gap.  Many variations exist and almost all have plain steel hilts with integral pommel and grips and fullered or plain blades. Only a few of them were high quality wartime expedients like this example and all were issued with a field-grey painted finish.  According to Paul Kiesling (Bayonets of the World – The Complete Edition P243) and page 115 of Roy William’s outstanding new reference ‘The Collectors Book of German Bayonets 1680-1945 Part Two’, this bayonet is an Ersatz Model EB 41 manufactured during WW1 to fit the Mauser Model 71, 71/84, 88 and 98 series rifles.

These plain pattern models were issued to all arms and services of the Imperial German Forces and were carried throughout the war on all fronts.   This particular bayonet is very good example of the rare 9 grooved hilted type which Carter designated EB 41: 9 grooved steel hilt with a round steel press button and internal spring, with circular oil hole, secured by two steel rivets, steel crossguard with open top muzzle ring and downswept quillon.  Sg 98/05 style single edged sharpened steel blade with wide fullers and a German Crown D acceptance mark on the back edge of the blade.

Overall Length: 482.0 mm
Blade Length: 362.0 mm
Blade Width (at guard): 33.0 mm
Scabbard: Ersatz Steel Pattern Sg 98/05
Overall Length of Scabbard:  400.0 mm

The blade spine is stamped with a ‘Fraktur’ D (Weapon-Office) acceptance mark. The 13.5 inch blade is very good. The steel 2 piece welded, field grey painted hilt is in similarly excellent condition and is unmarked.  The painted Ersatz Sg 98/05 Pattern steel scabbard is also in very good condition and has a great used patina. An excellent photograph of Prussian soldier of Infanterie-Regiment Graf Schwerin (3. Pommersches) Nr.14 Bromberg carrying a similar bayonet is attached to this listing for reference.

This EB41 bayonet shows clear evidence of field use although in my view that only adds to its appeal.  If, like me you prefer your bayonets to show evidence of use then this bayonet will be right up your street.  It’s an Australian sourced bayonet, probably a First War souvenir, and has a quite outstanding patina.  This one’s a ripper.
