FIRST WORLD WAR GERMAN 'ERSATZ' (SUBSTITUTE) MAUSER KNIFE BAYONET (EB 47 - CARTER) FITTED WITH A TYPE III ERSATZ SCABBARD MANUFACTURED TO FIT THE GEWEHR 88 COMMISSION RIFLE AND THE GEWEHR 98.

This bayonet is a very good example of what Anthony Carter in his seminal ‘German Bayonets, Volume III’ and Roy Williams in his excellent reference work ‘The Collectors Book of German Bayonets 1680-1945 Part Two’ classify as an EB 47 knife bayonet. This EB47 'Ersatz' (German for substitute) bayonet is fitted with a Type III ersatz scabbard in superb original condition. It's pressed steel hilt type with an open muzzle ring and retains much of its 'Feldgrau' paint on both bayonet and scabbard. Unlike many of the Ersatz bayonets seen on e-bay, this example was not sold or transferred to the Turks and was not adapted by them or ‘Turked’ as it is euphemistically termed.

The introduction of these 'Ersatz' bayonets dates back to the early days of WW1, when Germany could not meet, from existing stocks and production facilities, the increased demand for equipment from the rapidly expanding Imperial German Forces (consisting of Prussian, Saxon and Bavarian Army’s).   Attempts were therefore made to supplement the regular issue with simplified patterns. As no approved pattern was defined, many different variants exist, this one was designed to fit the Gewehr 88 and 98 rifles. Ersatz bayonets were by definition simple, mass produced and by pre-war standards, crude, weapons designed to fill a gap.  Many variations exist and most, unlike this EB 47, have plain steel hilts with integral pommel and grips and fullered or plain blades. All were issued with a field-grey painted finish.  For reference a couple of photographs of Prussian ‘feldgrau’ with similar EB 47 Ersatz Knife Bayonets fitted to their rifles’s are attached to this listing.

This bayonet has a pressed sheet steel hilt with circular oil hole, a steel crossguard with an upturned quillon and an open muzzle ring.  Single edge fullered steel blade stamped with a 'Fraktur' (acceptance mark) on the back edge of the blade. Scabbard is the all steel painted ersatz Type III, with bladed fixing lug and ball tip finial.

Type: EB47
Overall Length: 428.0 mm
Blade Length:  308.0 mm
Blade Width (at guard):  25.5 mm
Scabbard:  Ersatz Type III
Overall Length of Scabbard: 335.0 mm

The obverse ricasso of the blade and the spine have been stamped with a crown ‘Fraktur’ B acceptance mark. The fullered sharpened steel blade is very good with some staining and patination (see photos).  The originally field grey painted hilt is also very good with an excellent patina (see pictures). The Type III Scabbard, is in similar condition with much of its original field-grey painted finish still present. The bayonet has not been restored, repaired or re-painted and has not been ‘turked’.

This WW1 German EB47 bayonet shows clear evidence of field use although in my view that only adds to its appeal.  If, like me you prefer your bayonets to show evidence of use then this bayonet will be right up your street.  It’s an Australian sourced bayonet, probably a First War souvenir, and has a quite outstanding patina.  This ones a ripper.
