A VERY GOOD FIRST WORLD WAR FRENCH FIRST PRODUCTION MODEL Mle.1892 MANNLICHER BERTHIER BAYONET AND SCABBARD MANUFACTURED BY 'MANUFACTURE D'ARMES DE ST. ETIENNE TO EQUIPPED THE MANNLICHER BERTHIER CARBINES EMPLOYED BY FRENCH FORCES IN WW1 AND WW2.  This is a very good example of the French First Production Model 1892 Mannlicher Berthier Bayonet that equipped the Mannlicher Berthier artillery carbine issued to French forces in WW1 and WW2.  This example was manufactured by 'Manufacture D'Armes De St. Etienne' and is fitted with its original scabbard.

The Mle.1892 was designed for use with the Mannlicher Berthier artillery carbine.  The earliest versions, like this one, had narrow muzzle ring and black composite grips that were found to be prone to damage when used in the field.   Later versions were fitted with hardwood grips to address this shortcoming. The Mle. 1892 was originally equipped with a hooked quillon, which was designed to deflect an opponent’s bayonet but was found to catch on obstacles, particularly barbed wire.  As a consequence the French General Staff ordered that this feature be removed from French bayonets in 1915.  This example is one of the rarer 'originally hooked' versions that were adapted after 1915.

The original non-matching French armoury numbers 48167 on the hooked quillon and 12231 on thescabbard are clearly visible. The obverse ricasso and the scabbard are faintly marked with the St Etienne prefix letters ⒹⓇ which indicates that both were manufactured by same company.  Both bayonet hilt and blade are in very good original condition. The early production black composite grips display cracking around the steel rivets that fix them to the hilt.  This is the design fault that led to the switch to wooden grips later on in production.  The blued steel scabbard is in very good condition with some compression marking consistent with age and use (see picture).

This is a first class early production First World War French bayonet: Steel hilt with round steel press button and internal spring, two piece composite grips secured by two steel rivets, steel crossguard with hooked quillon and full muzzle ring riveted through the blade.  For reference, attached to this listing is a photograph of three French Poilu with First Production Model 1892 Mannlicher Berthier Bayonets fitted to their rifles.
