Quick Overview:

A VERY GOOD BOER WAR AND FIRST WORLD WAR BRITISH LEE METFORD / ENFIELD PATTERN 1888 MARK II BAYONET AND COLONIAL PATTERN 1888 SCABBARD MANUFACTURED AT THE ROYAL SMALL ARMS FACTORY (RSAF) ENFIELD IN JUNE 1899.  THE SAME PATTERN OF BAYONET THAT EQUIPPED ANZAC TROOPS WHEN THEY INITIALLY DEPLOYED TO EGYPT AND THE DARDANELLES (GALLIPOLI) IN 1915.  This is a very good example of a British Made Pattern 1888 Mark II Bayonet manufactured by one of the most highly regarded and sought after Pattern 1888 makers (ENFIELD - EFD) to fit the Lee Metford Rifle and early versions of the Lee Enfield Infantry Rifle.  Its an example of the type that equipped many ANZAC troops when they first deployed to the Egypt and the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) in 1915.

Attached to this listing for reference are two photographs; one, taken in 1914, shows a Light Horseman with Pattern 1888 Mk.II while the second is of Diggers manning a trench at ANZAC Bay in Gallipoli with Pattern 1888 Mk.1 Type II bayonets fitted to their rifles.

The markings are clearly visible.  On the obverse ricasso the June 1899 (6 ‘99) date is clearly stamped at the base of the 12 inch blade as well as the crown and cypher of HM Queen Victoria (VR – Victoria Regina – 1837 - 1901). On the other ricasso the manufacturers name EFD is visible along with the 'X'blade proof mark, War Department (WD) broad arrow, and a unique Enfield inspectors mark of a crown over 98 over E. The pommel has a characteristically colonial weapon armoury number 1022.

The 12 inch blade, is in very good patinated condition while the Colonial Pattern 1888 Scabbard with its distinctive integral frog is excellent and marked on the rear face of the belt loop BAH 253 - see picture. The hilt, with its polished mahogany grips is original and in excellent condition, whilst the 2 brass rivets and clearance hole in the pommel clearly show this to be a Mark II.

This is a first rate World War One Pattern 1888 Mk.II Bayonet from one of the best of manufacturers with a great patina in excellent overall condition: steel and wood hilt with a round steel press button and internal spring, two piece mahogany wood grips, secured by 2 brass rivets, steel crossguard with muzzle ring and short quillon.  Double edged steel unfullered blade, dated 1899.

A very good original example of what is widely accepted as the finest British bayonet of the modern era.  An Australian sourced Pattern 1888 Mk. II Bayonet.  These very scarce bayonets rarely come on the market and almost never in this sort of condition.  This bayonet is a keeper.
