Italia - Cavalleria e Carabiniere Cavallo Reale Spada, il Modello 1860

RISORGIMENTO & FIRST WORLD WAR ITALIAN MODELLO 1860 CAVALRY & ROYAL HORSE CARABINIERE CAVALRY TROOPERS SWORD AND SCABBARD.  An excellent original Italian M.1860 (Modello 1860) Cavalry & Royal Horse Carabiniere Troopers Sword manufactured in Germany by the firm of S&K or Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany between 1860 and 1864 and issued to Italian Cavalry Troopers (Cavalry officers and NCO’s were issued with the slightly shorter variant). According to P. Calamandrei in the excellent "Storia dell'arma bianca italiana" (History of the Italian Edged Weapons) this sword was issued to the Cavalry and Royal Horse Carabiniere during the last two campaigns of the Italian "Risorgimento" (Resurgence – The Italian unification 1815-1871) and was still in use  with the Italian Heavy Cavalry during the First World War, most notably  with the Reggimento Corazzieri (Cuirassiers' Regiment).  Attached to this listing are two excellent WW1 photographs, the first showing Italian Cavalrymen escorting German PoW’s while the second shows Italian Cavalry resting from escorting Austro-Hungarian PoW’s.

The Modello 1860 was introduced into service as the standard issue sword for all heavy cavalry troops in the Italian Army.  This example is fitted with a heavy slightly curved sabre single edged blade.  The long variant of the Modello 1860 had a blade length of 89.6cm and was issued to cavalry troopers.  It was slightly longer than the cavalry officers and NCO’s Modello 1860 variant which had a blade length of 88.0cm.  These swords were made by a number of well-known Italian and German edged weapon manufacturers. This particular example is marked S&K on the obverse ricasso for Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany and inspector stamped PF. According to Bezdek's “German Swords and Sword Makers”, this firm was active between 1811 and 1864. As this sword is an M1860, the sword probably dates sometime between 1860 and 1864 and is in excellent original condition.

These M.1888 swords are large, robust and well made weapons.  This Italian issue sword is an excellent example of its type.  It is fitted with a steel half basket hilt, with cylinder pommel and steel guard with grooved steel ferrule.  All metal furniture is in excellent condition with a aged patina as is the leather covered brass wire bound wooden grip which is undamaged and unmarked. The heavy sabre blade is single fullered and single-edged, tapering to a profiled point and is in very good patinated condition (see pictures). The heavy duty steel scabbard, with its single hanger-ring is in similarly good condition.

This Risorgimento era and First World War Italian M.1860 Sword is in excellent original condition and is a first class example of its type. A huge, robust and superbly crafted weapon this sword is an excellent example of a scarce variant of the seminal Italian Heavy Cavalry Sword of WW1.
